Serenity garden provides scenery to serve Kosair’s mission
Visitors to the Kosair Charities Centre may notice a new addition to the building’s beautified campus. A new serenity garden has been added in the west parking lot outside of the W. Barnett Owen Annex.
The serenity garden, including benches and landscape features, is part of The Memorial and Honor Garden that surrounds the historic Kosair Charities building. These recent campus improvements help draw attention to the charity’s location nestled among homes on Eastern Parkway.

The renovation—inside and outside—provides staff and volunteers with more room and a better atmosphere to assist the children, families and organizations that depend on Kosair Charities’ assistance. Donors, former and current patients, and other guests visit the office to learn more about the charity and about the services and support it provides. Improvements made as part of the Memorial and Honor Garden allow the Kosair Charities Centre to be more accessible and beautiful for guests.
As part of the fundraising campaign, individuals who contribute to Kosair Charities may
recognize a loved one by naming a particular part of the garden. Contribution levels range from $50,000 for the garden’s Silent Messenger centerpiece to $250 for tree and shrubbery features. The donor’s name, or the name of a loved one, can become a permanent part of the building’s sweeping landscape as a lasting testament of your commitment to top-quality pediatric medical treatment for children who need financial and other resources for help.

Here at Kosair Charities, we are very proud of our legacy of helping kids since 1923. Not only that we have cared for so many, but that 90 cents of every dollar raised directly impacts kids. We can do that because of low overhead and strong internal controls.
In this post-Enron environment, donors expect and demand that organizations demonstrate and embrace a higher standard of care. Currently, two Kosair Charities Board members and three senior staff members are certified as an Accredited Investment Fiduciaries (AIFÆ). The certification requires ongoing education encompassing a unique, comprehensive overview of fiduciary standards of excellence, asset allocation, investment policy statement preparation, manager search and due diligence, performance measurement, and other related subjects. Kosair Charities has more certified AIF directors than any other non-profit in the region. They are trained to adhere to specific spending and giving policies. This ensures that the treasures provided to help our Kosair Kids are managed correctly and that we can continue providing the same care for generations to come.
Kosair Charities undergoes an independent financial audit every year, and we are proud that we have always met audit standards. The clean audit indicates that Kosair Charities' financial statements accurately represent our financial position in conformity with accepted accounting principles.
Additionally, we are constantly examining our internal controls to prevent any type of miscalculation or waste. Every financial gift is precious to us and Kosair Kids.
