Addie Childers
When infant Addie Childers’ life-altering therapy was declined insurance coverage, her parents, Dustin and Jill, were unsure of their next step.
That’s when they remembered Kosair Kid Cole Herrick’s TV commercial, which served as an example of what Kosair could do for their own family.
Addie, now 5 years old, experienced difficulties during birth when she became entangled in the umbilical cord. Technically, her condition is similar to cerebral palsy.
To maintain a healthy lifestyle, Addie would need expensive treatment called “VitalStim” at the K.I.D.S. Center on Kosair’s campus. The therapy involves electric stimulation and was successful in treating Addie’s throat. However, the Childers’ insurance company deemed the procedure “alternative treatment,” leaving the family with mounting medical bills.
They then turned to Kosair, which completely covered Addie’s medical expenses, and then some. Kosair also covered a special assistive pushchair and tricycle for Addie. This allowed her to not only get around, but interact with her peers as well.
The Childers family is forever grateful to the organization that gave them and their daughter hope. “What Kosair has done for us is above and beyond,” Dustin says. “They’ve done this for so many kids. It makes us want to give back.”
